In this fantastic version of medieval Japan, the harmony of life is preserved by a dragon who watches over the sacred balance of good and evil. Alas, the evil Black Emperor has sent an assassin to kill the White Emperor’s wife. Seeking revenge, the White Emperor challenges his old enemy to a duel -- and is killed in his turn. Before breathing his last, he asks the Tengu, a powerful warrior formerly in the service of the dragon, to watch over his three daughters: Blade, Jade and Silk. Bakemono is a heroic fantasy tale set in an Oriental universe. It offers the familiar imagery of Japan, added to that of magic and of fantastic creatures. Beneath his appearance of a simple samurai, the main character is really a "tengu," a spirit-animal as ancient as the world. However, in his human incarnation, he is vulnerable to human sentiments, and his sacred mission risks being disturbed by a previously unknown emotion: love.
